Ways to Use Olive Oil in Your Beauty Routine

Yes, you can grab some of that oily goodness out of your kitchen cabinet and slather yourself in it. I’m not saying you’d really want to do that, but it is actually good for your skin. Olive oil has some killer benefits and it’s something I always have on hand when it comes to skin health and moisturizing.

5 Great Ways to Use Olive Oil in your Natural Beauty Routine

What kind of good stuff does olive oil have in it?

Olive oil promotes elasticity, it’s FULL of natural antioxidants, and it contains a ton of vitamin A. It’s also got high amounts of vitamin E which is great for the prevention of aging signs. When you let olive oil soak into the skin, you get all of that good stuff.

Be aware though, if you want to use olive oil for your skin, make sure you only use organic, extra virgin olive oil. You will not get the same effects without this type of oil, and it’s much safer than non-organic choices since it is going to be absorbed through the skin.

Bathe With Olive Oil

Fill the bathtub up with steamy hot water and add in a few drops of lavender essential oil (or a different oil of choice). Next, rub your body down with olive oil and then just relax in the tub. Rinse off before getting out and the result will be super soft, healthy looking skin.

Treatment for Dry Hair

I kid you not, has been a lifesaver for my hair. We travel so much that my hair seems like it’s always going through some sort of transition period. When we were in Colorado last summer it was so dry that I’m surprised I wasn’t mistaken for a troll, and my Patagonia hat was my best friend.I was about to have my elbow-length hair chopped off, but after a shower one evening I decided to rub a decent amount of olive oil into my hair, and comb it through. I twirled my hair into a bun and slept with a towel over my pillow. I washed it out in the morning and it was a miracle I tell you! My hair was so soft and felt much healthier. I do this about once a month now for softer, healthier hair.

Cure Cracked Heels

Olive oil works similarly to the intense lotions you can purchase that moisturize to get rid of cracks in the skin. The great thing about it though is that it is chemical-free and as natural as it gets. If you want to get rid of cracks in your heels, massage a good amount of olive oil into the problem area, and put some old socks over your feet before bed. By morning most of the oil should have absorbed into the skin. Do this a few nights in a row and you’ll see some major improvements.

Ear Wax or Aches

Have you ever heard people say to use sweet oil for earaches? Olive oil is actually very similar. It has a couple of uses when it comes to the ears: You can let a few drops fall into the ears before cleaning them. This helps to break up the excess wax and help it make its way out of the ear canal.

You can also place it in the ears to help soothe aches. Just keep a cotton ball over the affected ear as well.

Makeup Remover

Many natural oils do wonders with makeup removal, and olive oil happens to be one of them. Massage it into the areas you want to remove the makeup, and then wipe the oil off with a wet, warm washcloth. You may have to do this a couple of times, but normally it wipes right off.

Shaving Cream

I’m not joking- you can use this stuff as a replacement for shaving cream. Just keep a little jar or bottle of it in the shower with you. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and there you have it! Just rub it over the legs before you shave and you’ll be left with soft, smooth skin

The uses in this post are some of my favorite and I personally use them on a daily basis. If you’d like to learn a little more about using natural oils in your beauty routine, you might like to take a look at these posts too:

Are You Drinking Enough Water? Chances are, You’re Not. #summerH2Ochallenge

I am always HORRIBLE about drinking water when I should, and I come nowhere near the nine 8oz glasses that are recommended for daily intake (for men, it’s thirteen 8oz glasses). For me, it’s usually more like a couple of gulps a day, just to wash my food down. I know, I’m awful! It’s that busy mama thing- my kids are always more than hydrated, and I know this because my five-year-old always has to make three trips to the bathroom every time I take him grocery shopping with me. So basically, I always forget about myself.

are you drinking enough water

Well, did you know how important water really is for your body?

“Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.” -Mayo Clinic

It helps your body conduct its normal daily functions, and well, I’m just going to put myself out there and say it- I’m always constipated. I have issues with adult acne, I get headaches a lot, and I just think that I could really benefit from drinking more water.

According to this article from  Mind Body Green, water also Increases energy and relieves fatigue, promotes weight loss, improves skin complexion, aids in digestion and helps to prevent constipation, boosts the immune system, and helps to prevent and relieve headaches.

So to help raise awareness of how important it is to drink water on a daily basis, I’ve decided to start a Summer H2O Challenge and document the changes I see from drinking a full 2200 ml of water a day for an entire month!

I’ll do an update in about a month to let you know if I notice any changes in my health or energy levels from drinking the daily recommended amount of water, but feel free to jump on the bandwagon and do the summer H2O Challenge with me. I’d love to see your pictures on Instagram with the hashtag #summerH2Ochallenge!

8 Ways to Improve Your Health with Apple Cider Vinegar

I always knew vinegar was a fantastic alternative to nasty chemicals when it came to cleaning, but when someone mentioned that I could improve my health with apple cider vinegar, and use it to cure the acne on my face, I was honestly a bit skeptical. I had tried everything to get rid of the awful acne on my chin. It showed up after my daughter was born two years ago, and decided it was happy staying. I finally gave apple cider vinegar a try, and to my surprise it actually worked!

ACV has played a huge part restoring the natural PH balance of my skin, and I have since learned a lot about ACV and the natural ways it can improve your health. Below, I have shared just a handful of the ways your can improve your health with apple cider vinegar, but I would first like to mention exactly what kind of ACV you should be using. When purchasing ACV, make sure that it is Organic, unfiltered, unpasturized, and includes the “Mother.” ACV that is unpasturized and includes the “mother” contains enzymes and other antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral components that most other ACV’s do not. The ACV that I use is Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, and it can be found in most natural grocery stores for around three dollars.

So, let’s get started….

#1 Sunburn

Add 1 cup of ACV to your bath water. This should relieve some of the pain associated with sunburn. After soaking for a while, hopefully your pain will lessen, and you will be relaxed of course!

#2 Colds

When a person catches a cold or virus, their bodies usually end up overly acidic. By taking a couple of Tablespoons of ACV, with some honey, lemon juice, and warm water, it will reduce symptoms, as well as help to fight the virus with its antiviral properties. It should also give you a little burst of energy!

#3 Acne

ACV works as a natural toner for the skin. Mix 1 part ACV with 2 parts water. apply with a cotton ball to your face after washing. I usually apply it at night, because honestly it doesn’t smell the greatest. It really works though! It may be a little too drying or harsh for some skin, so if necessary, you can always add more water to dilute the solution. You can also use it every other day if you need to.

#4 Balance Your Entire Inner Body System

The body is constantly striving to achieve a state of equilbrium. Most people are too acidic, and taking ACV internally counteracts the acidity and keeps your body working as a fine tuned machine. By taking 2 Tablespoons of ACV mixed into your glass of water a few times a day, your body’s PH levels will become more balanced, which will in turn have positive effects on your entire body.

#5 Re-Energize

What mama couldn’t use a burst of energy every once in a while?! Have yourself a shot of ACV for a quick burst of energy a few times a day!

#6 Constipation

Going back to #4, adding a couple of Tablespoons of ACV to your water a few times a day will aid in balancing the correct bacteria in your gut, as well as keep your bowel movements more regular.

#7 Diabetes

Scientific studies have shown that ACV helps to raise the blood sugar in patients with Type 2 Diabetes!

#8 Hair

Add 1/2 Tablespoons of ACV to a bottle, along with 1 cup of water. Rinse with the ACV solution after shampooing a few times a week for strong, shiny hair.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to apple cider vinegar. It is something that everyone should have in their cabinets. I hope that I was able to open your eyes and inspire you to take  a more natural approach to your health with this post.
